• The Academy Is… - Fast Times At Barrington High

  We didn't put any sugar in our tea the morning we first listened to TAI...'s third album, in full knowledge that the sugar intake Fast Times At Barrington High would provide us 200% of the day's RDA.
  
  Being that it's their third album; TAI... were faced with a fork in the road. Do they 'mature' their sound to challenge the many critics that question their credibility as a rock band, or do they perfect their uplifting, summery pop for the far larger number of fans eager for more? Not that difficult a question, really, but the results are surprisingly a little bit of both. Track after track bounces out of the speakers, each a potential single, each with its own hook and easily memorable set of lyrics. It's a big improvement, especially considering the awkward, retro-peddling (but still well received) Santi.
  
  Where most tracks will be too sweet for many, the surprise stand out is 'Crowded Room', the guitars cranking up in a harder way, harmonics and palm-muted chug underlying more urgent vocals and an explosive tone.
  
  The lyrical content has changed very little; relationships and the fairer sex are behind most of it, but musically they are improving, the occasional moments reminiscent of The Cure, and 'Paper Chase' could be a Feeder Single. But the best thing? No sh*tty ballad. We spent the entire album terrified of the acoustics being whipped out for a hideous 'tender' moment to send the girls into jelly-legged hormonal hysteria, but it never happens and the world is a far better place for it.
  
  This album is continually well paced, uplifting and instant. There's no denying the fact Fast Times... is sweet enough to keep dentist's in business for a decade, and that this is music tailored almost exclusively for the fairer sex, but if that's what you want, you simply will not do better this year.
