Paper Route - Absence Remix EP
Remix albums have had a turbulent history in the rock world, with usually only a few gems hidden in an otherwise misjudged fusion. Here we have the superior melancholic pop of Paper Route given the remix treatment: unfortunately, with only a few songs on preview, the EP can only manage to achieve the same old mixed results.
'Tiger Teeth' is a strong opener, mixed by the creative Passion Pit and providing an eclectic version which complements the track perfectly without losing its identity. The good will is soon forgotten, however, with a pedestrian remix of 'Gutter' by Nick Catchdubs - starting off well enough, but dissolving into a rather bland offering of clichéd dance beats which meanders and irritates at the same time. It doesn’t help that Paper Route themselves have a far superior remix on their MySpace page from competition winners Blue Satellite Vs Muscle Hawk either. 'The Enemy Among Us' remix is as good as you'd expect an Inner Party System version to be, drastically improving one of Paper Route’s weaker songs and making sure the EP finishes on a high.
Dance music should induce the rapture that can either rock your spine or encourage relaxation. However, as with previous remix albums, it's played safe - being somewhat stuck inbetween these essential musical ingredients. This is one for the Paper Route die-hards only.
