Kasabian - Vlad The Impaler
Leicester boys return. Again.
Taken from hugely successful third album 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum', Kasabian attempt to prolong their success with latest single 'Vlad The Impaler'. Given that indie has being dying on its arse lately, Kasabian’s continuing success is testament to their songwriting. Where other bands have been unable to sustain initial success (just ask The Enemy) Kasabian’s ability to write 'anthems for the masses' has seen them bag one of the biggest selling albums of 2009.
Named after the serial killer and inspiration for the character Dracula, 'Vlad The Impaler' has been described as guitarist Serge as a “chaos tune” and a “call to our people”. Given the lyrics this isn’t too bold of a claim: “All my friends are as sharp as razors/cut you down if you touch the faders” leads the chorus chant, whilst later lyrics suggest raising the dead and lost heretics.
Backed by a pulsating beat and some clever guitar work from Pizzorno, Kasabian have once again managed to combine indie and dance to great effect, as demonstrated by the impressive instrumental version accompanying the single. Given that the Gallagher brothers have seemingly hung up their parkas and shades, Kasabian may yet steal their crown as Britain’s favourite indie band.
