Grammatics - Double Negative
Released on legendary Leeds based label Dance To The Radio, this new single from quartet Grammatics starts well enough with a menacing riff - unfortunately, once the slightly whiny vocal begins it all goes a little bit 'emo', but redeems itself by being incredibly catchy. The band wear their influences proudly on their sleeves: there's swathes of My Bloody Valentine in the music and hints of Suede in Owen Brinley's yelping vocal. It combines well to create a complex sound that's difficult to pin down and proves that eponymous debut album definitely wasn't a fluke.
The B-side, a remix of album track 'Murderer' by Gavron, starts off impressively - all moody synths and echoing feedback - but ultimately fails to deliver on the breakdown. Instead the end drifts into an ambient soundscape that's just begging for some sort of electronic drop. 'Murderer' is ripe for another harder dance remix but, like the single, feels like it's caught in between two different genres and unsure of whether it should be mainstream rock or experimental indie. There's room for focus and improvement, but the signs are positive.
