Green Day - Know Your Enemy
It's been over four years since Green Day's American Idiot changed things; propelling the band far beyond the already impressive status they held, so the fact they took their time on the new material makes a lot of sense. And with a conceptual album on its way you might think you'd be in for something quite different, but 'Know Your Enemy doesn't deliver.
As far as pop-punk goes, you can't go wrong with Green Day, and as part of 21st Century Breakdown as a whole it probably fits perfectly, but on its own its catchy "ole ole" chants and familiar simplistic chords seem a little unimaginative. Not that it will stop this being a storming success; it's incredibly easy to get it stuck in your head for weeks. It's energetic and engaging, but we're left wanting something a little more substantial from the leaders of the pack. 21st Century Breakdown may well be just that; but separated from the whole, this single falls short.
