Fall Out Boy - Thnks Fr Th Mmrs
'Immediately catchy' seems to be the mantra of Fall Out Boys' musical output. Layers of guitars and hard hitting drums will always fail to disguise the Hanson-esque mainstream appeal they bring to the pop-punk / emo genre. The problem with things being immediately catchy is that unless they have hidden depths of complexity or a timeless simplicity, they always get boring.
There seems to be no reason why this should happen. They do everything 'right'. Emotional lyrics with smatterings of 'profound' comments? Check. Classical instruments from the beginning to give the song an air of pomp and circumstance? Done. A hooky riff with a sing-along chorus? Yup. Then why does it fail?
The reasons are numerous yet subtle. Firstly, the lead singer's voice lacks the gravitas to pull off the more powerful singing. Fall Out Boy's attempts at complex song craft appear contrived and drone, lacking subtlety and nuance. Good lyrics either say honest, heartfelt truths, or present familiar themes in new ways. This single's lyrics do neither.
Redeeming features? Some might say it's just inoffensive power pop for teenagers who are finding their feet in rock. That may be true. It certainly catches the ear on the first spin, but they'll certainly grow out of it, in ten listens or less.Muhammad Odeh
