Billy Talent - Surrender
Billy Talent, who are at times chaotic and at times melodic have always been one of those bands that many love to love and many pretend that they love to hate. With an extensive and powerful back catalogue, new single 'Surrender' promises great things but does not deliver, at least by their usual standards.
Introducing the song we have steady rock drums and intricate guitars that have more akin with indie at its slowest and most tiresome rather than the melodic punk we are used to. The first two minutes of this song are simply boring, everything seems rather repetitive. Simple chords and straight forward spoken word vocals are given from Benjamin Kowalewicz. Indeed, even with thoughtful heart-wrenching lyrics about how the poor guy just can't seem to get the girl: "Even though I know what I'm looking for / She's got a brick wall behind her door / I'd travel time and confess to her / But I'm afraid she'd shoot the messenger"
The song as a whole fails to evoke the emotional highs offered in other newer efforts like 'Devil In A Midnight Mass' or the infectious 'Fallen Leaves' for example.
At two minutes 'dead on' however, for about thirty seconds we get Billy Talent as we are used to them, un-deniably and defiantly catchy. Unfortunately after this half a minute passes everything fades back into normalcy again. This is definitely the bands 'ballad'. Fans will no doubt love this, especially in a live setting as it does offer an arguably more emotional side to the group. However this is definitely a more chilled out BT than most will be used to.
