Rage Against The Machine have successfully topped the British singles chart.

The band, who were the subject of a Facebook campaign which pushed for people to buy the band's 'Killing In The Name' single over X Factor winner Joe McElderry, had the news officially confirmed at the weekend following a hotly-contested battle.

'Killing In The Name' sold over 500,000 copies, beating McElderry's single 'The Climb' by 50,000. 'Killing In The Name' also becomes the first ever Christmas number one to reach the top spot on downloads alone.

X Factor judge and record label boss Simon Cowell said last night he was "gutted" with the result, but congratulated the campaign organisers on their success, even offering them jobs at his record label SyCo.

Meanwhile, Rage Against The Machine's Zack de la Rocha called the grass roots campaign "incredible", with a large portion of the proceeds being donated to the Shelter charity. He also confirmed the band are planning a huge, free gig in 2010 to celebrate the success of the single. "We will definitely be there to celebrate with everyone in the UK" he told Radio 1.
