Metallica and Black Sabbath have confirmed they are to headline Download 2012.

Metallica, who this month released collaborative album 'Lulu' with Lou Reed, are set to play their classic 'Black Album' in its entirety, along with a selection of their greatest hits.

Drummer Lars Ulrich released a statement on the announcement, saying: ""We are beyond psyched and feel privileged to come back once again to soak up the energy and vibe of the most legendary of festival sites."

Black Sabbath meanwhile are reuniting with their original lineup - Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward - to headline on 10th June. It's set to be the band's only UK festival appearance next summer.

It's also been revealed the band are working on a brand new record with superproducer Rick Rubin, set for release next summer.

Download 2012, the festival's 10th anniversary, takes place at Donington Park from June 8-10. Tickets are on sale at 9am on Friday 18th November via this link.

A third headliner is expected to be announced this week.
