Bring Me The Horizon’s Oli Sykes issues statement over impersonation murder
A man pretending to be vocalist Oli Sykes lured a girl to her death.
Bring Me The Horizon vocalist Oli Sykes has commented after a man was jailed for attempted muder.
The man, David Russell, impersonated frontman Oli Sykes and lured Maricar Benedicto to woodland near Northampton, stabbing her four times. Benedicto believed she was meeting the Bring Me The Horizon singer. Russell was yesterday (5th October) sentenced to nearly 18 years in prison for kidnapping and attempted murder.
Sykes has issued a statement urging young people to be vigilant with how they interact online.
He said: "I woke up to the news in LA, and didn't really believe it at first. It's very unsettling. I'm aware that people have used my identity for pranks and whatever, which has always been something that's been uncomfortable for me, but for something like this to happen is terrifying. My heart goes out to Maricar and hope she recovers soon. I would also urge anyone using social networking sites about a really great foundation called the Carly Ryan Foundation
. Carly suffered a fate worse even worse than this case but the story isn't worlds apart. The foundation was set up to raise awareness and educate people on the risks of meeting people online. Stay safe and be careful.
Australian Carly Ryan was murdered after being lured to her death by a man she met online.
Bring Me The Horizon are currently on tour in the US and return to the UK later this year. They were recently involved in an on-stage brawl at a gig in Salt Lake City, where members of the crowd traded blows with the band. YouTube video was taken during the show.
