White Lies - Brixton O2 Academy

Misery-rock trio impress in Brixton.

White Lies

White Lies have experienced an incredible year. After completing sell-out tours throughout 2009, the band finally returned home and played to a more-than-warm London welcoming, and they seriously didn’t disappoint. Bustles of conversations were overheard, a Rocklouder favourite being: “this is definitely going to be one of the best things ever witnessed’. And judging from the sheer elation seen by all at the end of the gig, the statement actually did ring true for most of the capacity crowd here tonight.

The setlist comprised mainly of album material, playing the usual obvious crowd pleasers – ‘Unfinished Business’, ‘Farewell to the Fairground’ and the obligatory ‘Death’ as an encore, which saw the Brixton faithful savour every last moment and drop of energy. In addition to these, b-side ‘Taxidermy’, a previously unreleased ‘You Still Love Him’ and a cover of ‘Heaven’ by Talking Heads were all played out, though the latter saw the crowd become clearly restless for more familiar material.

It was unsurprising to see that the band held their own and captivated the crowd even in such a large venue - Harry McVeigh’s voice alone can silence even the most talkative of people and it echoed through the Academy with every note. Each song was performed flawlessly and with as much passion as the band could permit - it's a safe bet to suggest that, on tonight's display, White Lies are definitely well on their way to becoming one of the best live bands in the UK.
