Placebo, Carling Academy, Glasgow

Everything promptly goes mental, the band collapse on stage and all is right with the world.

Placebo have been around for years - longer than some of us would care to remember. A trio of glammed up individuals loved by those old enough to know better and those too young to be wearing that much make up alike. Not bad to say, to many, their frontman's nasal whine is like pouring sulphuric acid in the ear.

Opening with the title track from latest album 'Meds', the band sway from slow burning builder to groovetastic dark wave without so much of batting an eyelid. Other new material 'Follow The Cops Back Home' and 'Song To Say Goodbye' are equally majestic, with Molko still finding time to mouth off at James Blunt (he always picks the difficult targets - Ed) and Green Day.

'Every You And Every Me' sounds as fresh as the day it first appeared, and yes, after several requests from the crowd, more than a bit of teasing and a few over excited teenage girls, 'Nancy Boy' makes an appearance. Everything promptly goes mental, the band collapse on stage and all is right with the world. Or at least, as right as Placebo would want it.Alastair Douglas
