Funeral For A Friend, Reading Hexagon

They've had their knockers, but Funeral For A Friend could well have the answer; tonight they certainly do.

There's waiting a long time for a gig, and then there's this. Funeral For A Friend were supposed to play Reading Hexagon almost four months ago. Unfortunately Matt Davies contracted laryngitis and the date was cancelled (soft fucker - Overly Harsh Ed). There's some making up to do, then.

One would be forgiven for thinking Fightstar had nicked that time machine from Simmo's old band to go back and tighten up, Bill and Ted style. All of a sudden they sound absolutely fucking huge; bigger, harder and faster with a satisfying crunch. Certainly they've embraced a heavier, almost brutal sound; so much so that Eyebrows isn't even the critical axis point anymore. Step forward Omar Abidi, a drummer playing out of his, and for that matter everyone else's, skin.

Despite it all, it's all about Funeral For A Friend. From the all out chorus singalongs of 'Casually Dressed And Deep In Conversation' to the standoff emotion of 'Hours', there's an evolution to the Welshmens' sound that belies a band named after an Elton John song. There's a message, but not one that needs to be shoved, preacher like, down everyone's throat. Tracks which could die live don't, and the anthems sound more anthemic than ever. They've had their knockers, but Funeral For A Friend could well have the answer; tonight they certainly do.Missy Campbell
