Cute Is What We Aim For, The Cockpit, Leeds
Their enigmatic, lyrically-accentuated powerpop catches the crowd's imagination instantly.
Positively hundreds of girls with five colours in their hair and boys with sweeping fringes line the walls of an already congested tunnel, hoping to get a glimpse of Buffalo's newest export. Boys in bands are parked in vans by the side of the road, and the excitement is electric. The doors open, and in they rush.
From the word "Go", Cute Is What We Aim For deliver. Their enigmatic, lyrically-accentuated powerpop catches the crowd's imagination instantly, causing a gianormous surge forward upon the first strike on the guitar. Shaant admits being nervous to the crowd, but he needn't. Almost every line in every song is sung back to him wholeheartedly.
"I've got the gift of one liners and you've got the curse of curves", he croons, sending pulses racing. "Are you perspiring from the irony or just sweating to these lyrics?", the temperature of the room reaches ridiculous °C, simultaneously.
The crowd interaction is phenomenal. Fans fill in guest vocalist William Beckett of The Academy Is..'s part on the debut single 'There's a Class For This', entirely unprompted, much to the obvious enjoyment of the band. The intimacy of the venue only adds to the atmosphere, as word-perfect, spontaneous renditions from the audience reverberate off the walls.
Despite not being fully accounted for, Cute' are flawless. Whilst last minute bassist Jack Marin, formerly of October Fall, strums out several of the songs, he was unable to play for the entire performance. However, his vibrant stage-presence and water-tight performance of the songs that he did know more than makes up for it.
Luckily, they're not fazed by their first introduction to the British live music scene, executing a performance so immaculate that you could have been talked into believing it was recorded. It's no wonder that the crowd call for a double encore!
"Medically speaking," Cute Is What We Aim For are "adorable, and from what I hear, they're quite affordable" so bag your tickets to see them soon, we predict big things.
