Brigade / Disco Ensemble, Tunnels, Aberdeen
Brigade have a tough act to follow, but they are on top form tonight.
Brigade have toured pretty relentlessly this year, and this is their second visit to Aberdeen this summer. This time touring with Finland's Disco Ensemble.
Birmingham's The Scare get things underway tonight with their screamo fuelled punk rock, but fail to really reach out to the audience given that the venue is still fairly empty.
Co-headliners Disco Ensemble have no such problems however. The Fin's energetic performance encourages a similarly energetic reaction in the crowd, even though the vast majority know nothing of the band and their songs. With songs like 'We Might Fall Apart' and 'This Is My Head Exploding', they could and should be big. Miikaa Koivisto was clearly born to be a front man and boy does it show.
Brigade have a tough act to follow, but they are on top form tonight. The band sound, quite simply, huge. Drummer, Fim, and bassist, Noata Hori, providing a crushing rhythm to back up James Plant's superb lead. Will Simpson continues to show how great a front man he is, his soaring vocals and great rapport with the crowd emphasising this throughout the bands set.
Latest single 'Meet Me At My Funeral' goes down a storm, as do album tracks 'Assemble/Dissemble' and 'Made To Wreck'. 'Queenie', however, is just immense and sums up the whole performance. Set closer 'Magneto' is greeted with particular enthusiasm, and Simpson's stage dive ends the night in perfect rock n' roll style.
Tonight Brigade proved what a fantastic live band they are and judging by the smiles spread across their faces after the show, they are clearly ecstatic to be in the position to do what they love. The UK needs more bands like Brigade.Chris Leonard
