Biffy Clyro, The Ice Factory, Perth
The chants of 'Biffy, Biffy, Biffy...' ring out, and the eager crowd don't have too long to wait...
2006 has been a relatively quiet year for Biffy Clyro in terms of touring. Although they're well into double figures in numbers of shows, that's nothing for these guys. They can be forgiven though, with months of legal battle over their jump from label Beggars Banquet to major 14th Floor, they finally were able to get into the studio to record their highly anticipated 4th album 'Puzzle', due for release in the spring. This then, is the Ayrshire trio's first gig since the completion of the album, and warm-up for the XFM Winter Wonderland show in Glasgow.
Support tonight comes in the shape of Aberdeen threesome The X-Certs, a band who've been supporting the likes of Hell Is For Heroes and Biffy since they were 15. Still only 18 and 19, these lads have planty of time to fufill the great potential they have. Despite the clear influences of the likes of tonight's headliners and Hell Is For Heroes, they pack their own punch extremely well. Watch out for these boys.
It's not long though before the chants of "Biffy, Biffy, Biffy..." are ringing out, and the eager crowd don't have too long to wait. Recieving a rapturous welcome, the band begin with new Christmas single 'Semi-mental', a riff packed, three minute gem. What follows is a mixture of new material, much of which the crowd know already, and the Biffy classics. Simon Neil stands back as the mass sing along drowns out his vocals on 'Justboy' and the quite phenomenal 'All The Way Down'. No Biffy gig would be complete without '57', and the surprise inclusion 'Hero Management' is an inspired choice.
Closing with 'There's No Such Thing As A Jaggy Snake', the crowd have one final mosh before dissapearing into the cold outside. There is only one criticism, a slightly short set, but it was one hell of a set.
It's been a bit of wait for their return, but it has been worth it. The fans tonight are cleary exstatic at the return of their heroes. 2007 could be a big year, and 'Puzzle' could be a big album for Biffy Clyro. We wait with baited breath. 'Mon The Biffy!Chris Leonard
