We had a natter with the up-and-coming Newcastle chaps...

Boy Jumps Ship

Already causing a bit of a stir in their hometown, Newcastle natives Boy Jumps Ship have just released debut EP 'Engines' - it impressed us so much we rudely demanded an interview with them. Like, RIGHT NOW. Vocalist 'n' guitarist Si Todd sat down with us for a chat.

You guys are relatively new but you've already set some tongues wagging. How does it feel to be getting attention?
It does feel a little weird getting attention to be honest. To have people genuinely care about your music and what you're doing is something that is both really amazing and weird for us at the same time. Since we've only been around for a pretty short time the level of attention we're getting is all very new to us, but the support is great all the same.

You're from Newcastle. What's the best thing about being from there?
I'd say one of the best things about being from Newcastle is the community feel it gives out. It's not the biggest city in the country but it has a lot of character and charm about it. Yeah, there are some cool local bands kicking around. Our friends, Little Comets are definitely worth checking out!

Can you teach us some Geordie stuff to say?
A couple of key Geordie phrases you should learn are "Why aye pet" and "I'm gaan doon the toon". Those should be enough to get you started.

Show us a weird YouTube video.
This is pretty hilarious. Or this.

What's been the highlight of being in Boy Jumps Ship so far?
We've had a few so far. I'd say playing in front of a packed out O2 Academy in Newcastle last November was one of the best nights we've had as a band, the support was really overwhelming. We've also had the chance to play alongside some of our favourite bands like The Ghost of A Thousand and The Xcerts which was amazing for us. They're really nice guys too.

Ever literally jumped off a ship?
Haha, well not a ship exactly. I've jumped off a boat into the sea on holiday a few times if that counts?

We'll accept that. Who'd be your dream collaboration?
Our dream collaboration would be with either Andy Hull, Jesse Lacey, Tom Delonge or Adam Lazzara. Also, if we ever got the chance to play a show with Brand New, Biffy, Taking Back Sunday or Jimmy Eat World then that would be a dream come true for all of us. I guess it's not that much to ask, ha!

What did you grow up listening to?
Despite the fact that we all like a lot of the same bands, we also have very different tastes and influences when it comes to our own personal music taste. I think the different influences we each bring to the table help contribute to our sound as a whole. We like including melodic aspects into our songs, but at the same time we try and maintain a raw edge which I think helps to give us a good balance. I grew up listening to lots of music, my Dad was really into music so I grew up listening to bands like The Police, Fleetwood Mac and Thin Lizzy. Then, when I was old enough to start buying albums I bought 'Through Being Cool' by Saves The Day and 'Tell All Your Friends' by Taking Back Sunday. I'd definitely say those two albums had a big influence on me wanting to be in a band.

What are the plans for the rest of 2011?
If 2011 carries on the way it has started for us then we'll hopefully have a great year. We just want to keep pushing ourselves to write the best songs we possibly can and share them with everyone. Hopefully we'll be playing a load more shows and meeting as many new people as possible.
