In One Minute: Devil Sold His Soul

Hotly tipped 'ambient metallers' sit down with us for a chat

Devil Sold His Soul

We've been quietly impressed with Devil Sold His Soul - the sextet are currently carving out a really interesting niche in a fairly overcrowded British rock scene. Fusing metal, hardcore and weird ambient post-rock (basically like Converge fighting Sigur Ros, if you enjoy your comparisons), the chaps have just released their excellent new album 'Blessed and Cursed'. We had a 60 second chat with the band's Johnny about the new record and, er, Cyndi Lauper.

Your new album's just been released and it's great. How was the process of writing and recording this one in comparison to your debut?
Thanks! The writing was much the same as the last album but the pre-production stage was much more rigorous this time around as we wanted to be 100% ready for when it was time to record. It really paid off as the recording process was much more relaxed than with the previous album and we had a lot more fun.

You're a bit more sophisticated than a lot of other hardcore bands - we love that ace post-rock vibe you've got going on. What sort of stuff gets played on your tourbus, or that you collectively like?
All sorts of stuff gets played in the van really. What usually happens is we pass around someones iPod and choose some tracks each and make a massive playlist. This usually ends up with really varying tracks coming on, ranging from from Cyndi Lauper to Converge. There was a good one once where we had a Taylor Swift track followed by 'People=Shit' by Slipknot. Haha!

That's a terrifying twosome. You had a bunch of special YouTube promos in the run-up to this new album. Find us the weirdest video you can on there.
It may not be the weirdest one but this one is definitely totally cool.

You're touring with Architects and Norma Jean this autumn. That's a hell of a tour. We bet you're excited.
Yeah, it's a pretty awesome line up! We're all really excited about it. We just can't wait to get out there. In terms of the music, we'll be playing a totally new set which will have a lot of new stuff mixed in with some older favorites as well. So get ready.

We're doing a playlist of some of the best albums released so far in 2010. What'd be your pick to put on there?
Deftones' 'Diamond Eyes' for definite. Being around for that long and still cranking out awesome music like that is amazing. It's something that I'm sure every band strives to do, including us.
