In One Minute: Boys With X-Ray Eyes
Welsh metallers give us a minute of their time
After our jibber-jabber with run, WALK! a few weeks ago we thought we'd try and grab sixty seconds with our favourite young Welsh metal (or maybe 'Welshal', if you want to be a dick) gang Boys With X-Ray Eyes. If you've not heard them before they're screamy, loud, very good, and tipped for great things over the next year.
Hello! All bands have to form sometime. How did you do it?
With the exception of Rhys (bass) we all used to hang out in the same bar in Newport and became friends. We had all been in different college type bands but nothing serious. With the same goal of starting something we could focus on, to write and perform our own stuff we starting jamming material I'd written. During recording our EP we had to part with yet another bass player. We all knew Rhys from hanging round the studio and from drinking in a bar Phil (drums) used
to work at in Abertillery. We mentioned we needed a bass player so he turned up to practice and literally new all our songs. He fit right away. Not only because he was a massive fan, but because he looks exactly like Kevin Bacon.
Apart from being in Rocklouder (obviously) what's your proudest moment being in the band so far?
It's hard answering that. We have had the opportunity to play with some awesome bands, some of which we are good friends with now. That's always a proud moment getting encouragement from our peers. Getting on board with the Ryman our manager. He's a well good egg*. Some off the great reviews we've had, the fact that to date we've self funded, produced, recorded and released everything we have done. With much appreciated help from friends. Even our video was shot with one camera by our mate Matt and edited entirely by him and Ben (vocals).
Personally, I'm most proud that when our other guitarist left, we could have crumbled, as he was there at the beginning. But we knuckled down and stuck our necks out, playing a bunch of shows at short notice as a four piece. The response we got was what makes being in a band worthwhile. That's my proudest moment so far. Our ability to stick together no matter what and continue doing what we love, and going from strength to strength.
Do you genuinely have x-ray eyes? Can you see what underwear we're wearing?
You aren't wearing any underwear!
That's a yes, then. Find us the weirdest YouTube video you can.
Without being too graphic, this video is pretty effed up!
I love that. Plus the fact he can probably dance better than most of us. Anyway, you're from Wales - what is it about Wales that keeps making good rock music?
It must be something in the water. Or the fact that it's the smalltown idiotic mentality of most of the inbreds that makes you want to get out of here as quickly as possible. Don't get me wrong. I love being Welsh. It will always be home and there are some great people here. But, especially in the small towns, there's nothing to do. Either do steroids, get shitfaced, eat drugs and fight, play rugby or be in a band are pretty much the only options for a lot of people. I should work for the tourist board, haha. If you want to check out a sweet Welsh band look up The Bacon Brothers. It's our bass player Kevin Bacon and his brother playing some some sweet grooves.
What are you working on at the moment?
We have some pretty big shows throughout the rest of the year so we're looking forward to those. But our main focus is writing the next record. We 're trying to get it at least demoed by this year. Who knows, maybe even released. Time will tell. We don't want to rush it but at the same time we want to show people what we're all about now. There is a definite buzz in the BWXE camp. Can't wait to see where we go from here.
