Charlotte Hatherley
We managed to grab Charlotte for a quick chat...
It's certainly going to be a busy year for Charlotte Hatherley - her new single, 'I Want You To Know', is due out next week, her second solo album, 'The Deep Blue', follows shortly after on March 3rd, and she's just heading out on tour. Luckily for us, she's not to busy to do the occasional interview. We managed to grab her for a quick chat about Jurassic Park, being naughty, and sharing showers with David Bowie...
Hello! How are you? What're you up to at the moment?
Helloooooooo. I am recovering from a large xmas, with Jurassic Park on the box and a belly full of bacon... mostly I am great.
It's been nearly a year since it was announced you were leaving Ash, how are you enjoying going solo? Has it been anything like you expected?
It's been the strangest year... lots of ups and downs. I had the best time of my life recording the album in Italy, I love being in the studio. Having the time to really put everything into the music was something I couldn't really achieve when I was with Ash. Now I'm beginning to face up to a year of touring and promoting which is kinda scary without having the boys to back me up... but I've got some new boys and girls now so it should be just fine!
Tell us about 'The Deep Blue', your forthcoming album. Are you confident about it?
I'm very confident because it's the best album I could have made. There are parts of Grey Will Fade that I find hard to listen to because I know that it could have been much better... but again now I can take my time in the studio and make sure everything is as good as it can be. This album took a year to finish, and I hope you can really hear that attention to detail.
You've decided to release your second solo effort on your own Little Sister label, we take it Double Dragon didn't serve you too well?
Double Dragon was always gonna be a one album deal, and for an album like Grey Will Fade they were fantastic. This time round I funded the recording myself, and was able to work with Vital again, who distributed Grey Will Fade. I'm in a fortunate position where I can be completely independent and label free, and have complete control over my career and if I can pull it off that'll be quite something.
We love your 'Behave EP', is it a good representation of the album?
I think it is a good representation, there's lot's of different ideas and instrumentation on the album, and having 'Cousteau' and 'Mr Ed' together is quite apt! It's the more ambitious and grandiose side of me put with my love of rockin guitar songs. Cousteau is actually the first track on the album, but a much shortened version. I wanted people to know immediately that this album is something different.
Which is better: behaving or being naughty?
The girl in the song is desperately trying to behave, but it's so painful because she can't stop fantasising about how fucking amazing being naughty would be... I would say being naughty, but oh, the consequences!
Your next single is entitled 'I Want You To Know', what's the best thing anyone's ever told you?
You should stick to playing guitar. A great motivator.
You've put together a new band for next year's tour, how did you find them and how are you sounding?
I've got Stuffy on drums, he usually plays for Graham Coxon and toured with me last year, Jon is on bass, he plays in Stuffy's band and toured with me last year as well, Angie is on keys, she's part of the Goldfrapp crew, and Luke Smith on guitar, genius knob twiddler who was formally in Clor. If I was able to I'd also have 5 chicks on Backing Vocals and an extra drummer, but that just ain't gonna happen.
If you could have anyone in your band, dead or alive, who would you choose and why?
David Bowie from the Let's Dance era, on keys / guitar / vocals, to watch him shake his ass every night, do some mic sharing and oral sex guitar simulation... sharing showers and bunks on those lonely nights on the road.
Where do you think you'll be this time next year? Where would you like to be?
Hopefully I'll be having a lazy xmas, fucked from a year's successful touring and partying around the globe with another album's worth of tunes under my belt.
