Brigade
Brigade have been rocking various venues and festivals throughout the UK. We caught up with the band at their recent Aberdeen gig.
Brigade's full length debut, Lights, was released back in May to much critical acclaim. Since then the band have released the well received single Meet Me At My Funeral, been nominated for a Kerrang! award and have been rocking various venues and festivals throughout the UK. We caught up with the band at their recent Aberdeen gig.
This is your second visit to Aberdeen this summer, how's the tour been going this time?
Excellent, much better than the last tour. The last tour was great, but 30 days is a killer, and we were so dead after about a week!
Your album Lights was released at the tail end of the last tour. Have you found that the fans have been more energetic and responsive now they know the songs?
Definitely, the last tour was a great experience, and we were desperate for people to hear us, and to have something for them to put in their cd players. The crowd response has been great, singing all the songs back: this is definitely the reaction we were hoping for.
Last time you were here, there was a bit of an incident when there were some rather unnecessary comments made by a member of one of the support bands about Will's brother (Charlie Simpson - Fightstar). Is that something you find yourselves having to deal with often?
No, I think that's why my (Will's) reaction to it was more over the top, as I don't have to deal with it that often. So when it does happen, it's a bit 'in your face'. I don't mind if people don't like the band, but when they make wrong assumptions about my relationship with my brother, that's what winds me up the most.
We've had a few people on myspace say we're rubbish, but last time was a freakish one off!
You all have part time jobs to fund your touring, how do your employers feel about you jumping ship to go touring all the time?
We're lucky that we have jobs where we don't have anyone to answer too much to. It's difficult because allot people come to the end of the month and are struggling, and we try to do that with the odd week touring, and its a nightmare. It's difficult to balance work and touring, and we've probably not got it quite right. It's also tough when it comes to writing and rehearsing. It'd be great to be able to do the band for a living, but we're not there yet.
You've been lucky enough to play with some pretty awesome bands like Biffy Clyro and Sucioperro. Do you have any dream bands you'd like to play with?
Playing with Biffy Clyro was such an awesome time, on our first tour to play with one of my (Will's) favourite bands was a dream. I've also a bee in my bonnet about playing with Muse - that would be amazing.
I'd (James) like to play with Helmet or Girls Against Boys, and I'd love to play with Tool, but we're not really in the same ball park!
You were recently nominated for a Kerrang! award. That must have been great for you, and a damn fun night!
Haha! I've (Will) never looked at a load of photos and not remember any of them! We had a great time, but stupidly got far too drunk, far too early. We didn't think we we're going to win, but it was great to be nominated.
Having been nominated, do you now feel that you're starting to get the recognition you've been working for?
Yes, definitely. But in the world of myspace, its difficult to know how you're doing, but last time we played an unanounced show in Glasgow the reaction was amazing. So getting nominated makes us feel we're doing the right thing.
What's next for you guys after the tour?
Back to work! But then another tour with InMe which should be good fun, and then its time to start writing a again for the next album. We've got some ideas, bits and pieces, but it'd be nice to able to dedicate a weeks worth of time to rehearsing asnd writing.
Is there going to be another single from Lights before that?
In October we've got Guillotine coming out. The response we've had to the singles and videos so far has been great, we're just so happy to be where we are.
