New Band of the Month: Straight Lines
The first of our hot new band features for 2010...
Straight Lines have been on our radar for a while now, but since they're on the cusp of releasing their debut album in a matter of weeks we thought we'd bestow them the honour of receiving our first ever Rocklouder New Band Of The Month rosette. The rosette's only a shoddy virtual one, but whatever. It's the thought that counts, right?
We were taken with young Pontypridd quartet Straight Lines the moment we heard them - sounding like a curious middle ground between Coheed & Cambria, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, and the good bits of The Automatic. There's a canny skill with a melody, with the likes of 'Say It For Your Sake' embedding itself in our skulls for a severely uncomfortable amount of time (we're sure there's some sort of Claimsdirect compensation in there somewhere).
The always-on-form Xtra Mile Recordings spotted their potential last year and the Welsh quartet are now labelmates with folk hero Frank Turner, geek-pop princes The Xcerts and sort-of-mad-genius Beans On Toast. We reviewed their debut Xtra Mile EP 'Versus The Allegiance' here, giving it a stonking 4 out of 5, and we weren't the only ones to fall under its spell - the band were allegedly shifting up to 200 copies per night on their recent support slots with Motorhead, Kids In Glass Houses and The Automatic.
2010 sees the band attempt to conquer the world: they release self-recorded debut album 'Persistence In This Game' on 1st February, new single 'Runaway Now' on 8th February, and then head over to the US this spring, stopping off at massive week-long industry boozefest South By SouthWest in Texas.
Keep an eye out for our review of 'Persistence In This Game' in the coming weeks, but in the meantime head over to Straight Lines' myspace page and congratulate them on being rather excellent.
