Artist Of The Year: #5 - The Hold Steady

Many believe that bar-room rock died in America the day the Replacements split all those years ago. The Hold Steady exploded from the same home town (Minneapolis) this year to show us, in their words, 'how a resurrection really feels'.

Blending beat poetry with classic 70s rock riffs may sound like, at the best, a bad idea, but these hard drinkin', deep thinkin' princes of Americana have torn themselves a niche in the UK this year with stunning, joyous live shows that saw them graduate from the Borderline to Shepherds Bush Empire in just a couple of months, and be hailed as the best 'new' band at this year's Glastonbury. Already a cult band in the States, 2007 has been a remarkable year in the UK for The Hold Steady.

With a sense of humour to match their alcohol intake and a dark, broken heart at their core, the boys delivered a diamond in the album 'Boys & Girls In America' and two beautiful hit singles with 'Chips Ahoy' and the monumental 'Stuck Between Stations'.

They've recently announced a handful of new UK dates for February, and if anyone out there hasn't yet caught these guys live, we'd suggest getting yourself some tickets right now!
