Dum Dum Girls - He Gets Me High EP

It might just be a quick 14-minute fix for fans who are eagerly awaiting their sophomore album, but Dum Dum Girls’ EP ‘He Gets Me High’ is the perfect follow-up to the group’s delicious debut LP ‘I Will Be’.

The four-track release sees frontwoman Dee Dee and her all-girl rock quartet dish up the indie meets noise-pop sound that worked so well on their aforementioned full-length. Opening with the energetic and exuberant ‘Wrong Feels Right’, the lively tune features fast-paced guitars and drumming, both of which effortlessly complement the edgy vocals.

Having made excellent use of distortion and lo-fi on their first effort, the EP’s title-track sees the feisty females welcome back these trademark techniques. Directed at a lover, Dee Dee’s words and harmonies soar throughout, with the repetition of the chorus in the final 30 seconds sounding particularly stellar against the intricate instrumental.

Breaking out of their fuzz-pop comfort zone, ‘Take Care Of My Baby’ flaunts a softer and slower-paced sound, which the band pull off with ease. The ballad sees the music take a backseat and the song predominantly focuses on Dee Dee's passionate, powerful vocals.

However, it's their unexpected version of The Smiths‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’ that proves to be the highlight of the release. Despite it being an obvious cover song of choice for many artists, Dum Dum Girls give it a brand new lease of life by significantly speeding up the tempo.

Overall ‘He Gets Me High’ is a truly fantastic EP, the only flaw being that it ends far too quickly. We're excited to hear more.
