Interview: Desperado
Artist profile:
Desperado
Desperado are about to hit the UK for their first ever British tour, we caught up with them for a quick chat.
Hello! Introduce yourselves; who are you and where do you come from?
We are 5 individuals that plays together in this band called Desperado. We come from Trondheim, not a big city, but still one of Norway’s biggest. We have been around for 3 years, have released 3 different releases and been playing something like 150 shows since we started up and until now.
What's it like being a band in Norway? What's the 'scene' like?
The scene for hardcore is kind of small, so we are kind of integrated with the regular rock scene. This means that our audience in Norway is wide, and we have managed to find our way into the bigger festivals and scenes, and we guess that people are happy about that. In Trondheim there is a great tradition of underground music, there is a lot of bands and scenes, but hardly any one who make a living out of it. It’s more about having fun over here.
You'll be playing the UK in October - will it be your first time over here?
We have been in Europe on quite a few occasions, but never the UK. We are really looking forward to explore the UK, both bands, scenes, beer and the sights.
Will you have any days off for more 'touristy' things?
We have some days off, and we guess we will spend them on checking out guitars we cant afford to buy, buying music and drinking coffee.
Your album 'Beauty Is The First Victim' is released soon, what can we expect from it?
Expect a very crisp sounding band that sing and play from their hearts. Expect nine tracks where we deliver ourselves and how our lives is. Expect hardcore without that smooth baby bottom sound. This is how the Stooges would have sounded if they were a hardcoreband!
You've just released your album 'Thugs' in Scandinavia, has it had a good response? Will it be getting a UK release?
Very good response from the audience and critics. It’s our least mainstream recording so far, less rock and more of everything else. The album is dark and monumental, and the lyrics is the most personal we have written so far in our time as Desperado. We have gone inside ourselves and found new expressions, more to our roots and our hearts. The plan is to release it in UK sometime during the winter or spring of 2007.
You changed guitarists earlier in the year - how's Asgeir fitting in? Have you changed as a band or musically as a result?
If our last guitarist Eivind was like Angus Young, then Asgeir is like Tony Iomi. He is older than the rest, have a more heavy way of playing and is more into metal than the previous one. This supports our direction into a darker and heavier landscape real good. So it was kind of a change, that started before he joined the band, but got completed when he joined in.
Are there any new Scandinavian bands you can recommend?
New and new, we are really into bands like Cult of Luna. Back here in Norway we have some great bands like The Spectacle and Snöras, but the good hardcore and screamobands here, tend to break up before people get to know them. So be sure to check out Slaves of Doctor Ironhead from Oslo on myspace before it is to late. What a band!
Any parting words of wisdom?
Remember to brush your teeth both in the morning and before you go to bed, be sure to check out the Norwegian band Desperado if they are playing in your city soon, and check out their upcoming UK release. Cheers!
