Upon entering The Horse Hospital at which Proud now host their diminutive Year Zero club night; you are awash with black and white pictures of Sid Vicious and other such iconic punk stars of the seventies and eighties. And next to these quite cliched images sit the self righteous yet unimportant fashionites of our contemporary culture revelling in their framed company for the evening.
This is of course a judgement and a crude one at that. What would be more accurate is to say that many of these people mentioned above are here for reasons other then watching Future Of The Left and have even less interest and knowledge in the iconic substance that the three individuals that make up this band hold themselves.
Their previous outings as Jarcrew and McClusky is now stuff of underground folklore, and the influence of every punk sounding funk infused rock you hear today and the irony that these facts bereft onto the skinny jeaned fuckwits sipping Czech beer above, is a very satisfying one to behold.
It doesn't go unnoticed by the band either who are now officially the next milestone in what has been a creative timeline of influential music to come out of the Welsh underground. Whatever your opinion, Future Of The Left are hear to give you an experience. Whether that's offending you with mid set banter, giving you a splitting headache with the metal tinged 'adeadenemy...' or sending you into a delirious pogo dance during 'Manchasm' they don't particularly care.
They pretty much deliver all of it tonight. Fuelled by anger from some despicable sound faults, (the bands request for volume is constantly ignored), Future seemingly spaz out in front of our eyes. 'Plague Of Onces' as a result is more demented then ever. The song's screeching guitars cutting through disjointed base lines get the front few rows rawing the vitriolic lyrics before the repetitive tones of 'My Gymnastic Past' bring us to the brink of chaos. It's a line we don?t quite cross this evening, despite Kelson Mathias' best efforts at the end, diving head first into the stage barrier while still playing his base.
One hapless character agrees to spread the mess joining in the disassembling of Jack Egglestone's drum kit while he plays out the remaining beats of carnage.
Many of the onlookers mentioned at the start obviously left long before this joyous finale, but those who stayed may have been blown away by the obnoxious confidence Future behold in abundance. A little research and they may find the reasons why that, with this band, we have the nearest thing to punk then anything that's gone before them in recent times.
Whether that's the right thing to say or not we don't exactly know but what ever it is these boys do or have done in the past, it's something that we, quite frankly, can't get enough of and can't wait to experience again.
