It's been too long. About eighteen months in fact since The Music last appeared on any kind of stage. And of course that was only for a hand full of local shows which were over as quickly as they started. So it's not surprising that this recent run of mini tours have sold out with speed in what is proving to be the proper return of Britain's most underrated band.

Not much has changed either, but not in a bad way. Robert Harvey has stuck with his gritty shaven head, Adam Nutter is still making the most immense sounds from his guitar, and the crowd are still going ape shit for whatever they've got to give.

'The Truth Is No Words' bounces in it's northern spirit, while the seventies soul of 'Freedom Fighters' sends a wave of bodies into motion from its opening drum beat. All the previous singles get an airing tonight taking the gig into some kind of predictable territory but no sooner are you disappointed by the choice of song at it's intro then are you won over by the consistent infectious grooves and pure power of the music.

It sweats from the pores of 'Take The Long Road' and binds the crowd together during 'The People' with it's extended ending getting Harvey moving like a loon on stage and the crowd gasping for whatever air it can get. 'Human' is the exception to the rule slowing things for a minute or two as it's transcending melodies build to the crashing finale.

Tonight's not just about re-living past glories however, there's a host of new songs on offer, almost overwhelming in their quantity but all with that trademark Music sound and being as good as anything these guys have released previously. New single 'Strength In Numbers' gets a great response after it's endless recent radio play but it's the unheard stuff that really shines. 'Drugs' for instance is worth more then a mention and looks set to figure live for a while yet.

For all the delights tonight delivered however, this the sound of a band on the comeback trail. The Music aren't firing on all cylinders just yet but there's more then a glimpse this evening of a band with a new confidence and direction. For now, it's clear they're glad to be back. As glad as the contingent of sweat drenched fanatics leaving the ULU and revelling no doubt in what is yet to come. The Astoria show in July will surely pull the curtain down on what has been a well rehearsed come back. If all goes to plan it could cement The Music's place as a prominent figure in Britain's current indie scene. It's about time too.
