Blood Red Shoes - A Box Of Secrets
Artist profile:
Blood Red Shoes

Label: V2
Rating: ****
Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell are not the most well known names in British indie but their decision to jam together after the demise if their previous bands, is one which proves the romance of rock and roll is still alive and breathing. Their first musical child, in the shape of debut album 'Box Of Secrets' is one that will transform Blood Red Shoes from a spontaneous eclectic project into a full blown rock band to be taken seriously.
From the early sound bites which bore this band to the engaging velocity of ‘Say Something...’, Blood Red Shoes have made one of those albums that has been waiting to happen for a long time now. The fact that its come in the current musical climate, along with the current trends, makes it that little bit more vital than anything else out there at the moment and one listen will tell you all need to know.
Starting with their early singles the premise here is one of promise and potential. ‘ADHD’ takes on an early nineties American alt rock sound creating a noise which shouldn’t be made by just two people. Ansell’s consistently pounding drums are a useful tool and are used with increasing effect throughout this album. None more so then on ‘You Bring Me Down’. A tune which confirms this band's British roots, as raw pop hooks play against brooding post punk riffs.
The progression and maturity from these early gems is the key to keeping you with this record. ‘Its Getting Boring By The Sea’ is a short but sweet example of the flowing, dark creativity which this couple behold in abundance. It seeps through the repetitive drone of ‘I Wish I Was Someone Better’, combining the pairs contrasting vocals, while a disco infused chorus whips along, eventually leading the song into its final persistent refrain.
To call this classic would be over stepping the fine line at which Blood Red Shoes currently stand, they are after all one album into what is in essence an over blown recording session. What it has sparked however is a sound and style which is exciting as it is original and one that will have you coming back for more over and over again.
