Being away for three years hasn’t slowed Sweden’s Millencolin down any. Seventh album 'Machine 15' has all the lively energy as their previous efforts, with a little added depth this time around. And having artwork that is blatantly meant to be the Transformer Grimlock is no bad thing, either.
Exciting from the off, opener and title track ‘Machine 15’ has an element of the Kinks’ ‘All Day And All Of the Night’ to its poppy stomp. The album is full of feel-good pop-punk anthems, but mercifully free of the saccharine shine that such a genre-tag would conjure, and contains some more diverse elements (Strings are elegantly used during ‘Done Is Done’).
As ever with this kind of material, after a while the songs become a little interchangeable, and tracks like ‘Come Back’ and weak single ‘Detox’ prove utterly throwaway. But the songs are full of hooks, riddled with melody and consistently uplifting. Millencolin have produced yet another album packed with summery pop-punk that more than emphasises how ludicrous it is that after fifteen years they aren’t one of the world’s most successful pop-punk bands.
