The Death Cab Soundtrack - 1977-1980
Artist profile: Death Cab For Cutie

While we're talking about the Death Cab soundtrack, I don't think I can narrow down things to an actual band, but you know, what I can narrow it down to is a period of time. I think that 1977 to 1980 - from when I was 2 till the time I was 5 - is that period.

Every generation rewrites the book a little bit... it was Buddy Holly and then it was The Beatles, and then it was whoever, and it feels like everybody in every corner of pop music was rewriting the book between '77 and '80. Like from the UK, Wire - i'm really obsessed with Wire right now, it's the band i've been really going back to and doing all my homework - but there was so much stuff that was happening here in the UK. The first 2 XTC records I think are criminally underated, and in
New York everything that was happening there, like Television, Talking Heads and all that stuff. Devo at that point, Kraftwerk at that point. It's just this thing that was happening there for 3 or 4 years, and all that shit is really, really square. Well i mean, i guess apart from Television.

It's funny because for the first time in rock music it feels like there is this desire to try and square everything up, but it's definitely still in an analog world, so you're getting different versions of robot music. I mean, between bands like XTC and Kraftwerk you've got bands that are just trying to be as fucking tight as possible. Devo too... there's so much discipline and so much real attention to craft, attention to delivery and playing and stuff. I guess that's the commonality with all those bands, that they're just so committed to what they're doing.

Watch some XTC from 1977...

...and try Devo playing 'Satisfaction':
