Death Cab's Tips - Bell Plaines
Artist profile:
Death Cab For Cutie
Well, I spend a lot of my time just trawling myspace and finding bands that are not even making proper records yet and there's this guy in Portland who's recording under the name Bell Plaines. I just met him actually, he came to the Eugene show that we did a couple of weeks ago, and he's actually a film guy. Music isn't like his first thing, but his songs have this thing for me that - and i'm not a movie guy at all - but you can see the films that are supposed to go along with the soundtrack. It's really cool, and it's totally beautiful.
It owes as much to Slowdive as it does to some of the Eno stuff, but he's like a folk singer too, so it's all that stuff and then its this almost Iron And Wine style guitar playing and song delivery.
It's really pretty and it's really cool. I mean it's just such a feather of a record, ya know... if you opened the door too fast it would blow away, it's barely there. It's so tiny, and so small, but so compelling.
I got lots of messages from kids on myspace asking me check out their band and I always do, but i don't often get more than 10 or 12 seconds into anything, but he sent me a message and I listened and before I knew it a whole song had gone by and I though it was really cool. Then the 2nd song went by and I thought it was kinda too good to be true, and it actually got me wondering if I knew it! I was thinking 'is this a side project of someone i really like??'. He had 8 songs up on his page and I listened to them all, like 4 times before i knew it. He's selling them and I bought it and it's my favourite record right now. It's just great and i haven't got sick of it.
You can check it out on his myspace here.
This is the video for 'Slow Orbit' too:
Once you're done with those, let me know what you think!
