Fresh out of the scene that sporned a very influential form of heavy American punk rock and the infamous Epitaph Records, Pennywise have been doing the rounds almost twenty years now. An impressive feat to say the least, in an era that has witnessed the rise and fall of many bands baying for the attention of the masses.
And while Pennywise haven’t constantly rode the crest of the success wave, they also, like the scene they helped create, have never changed or conformed to the more popular and sometimes exciting brands.
It’s a punk rock ethic which has no doubt helped create their tenth long player 'Reason To Believe' and the fifteen belting tracks which make up the record. From the bruising opener ‘As Long As We Can’ to the closing refrains of ‘Next In Line’, Pennywise have created a record of such immense solidarity, that its no wonder they’re still knocking about, showing everyone else exactly how its done.
Take the hardcore bite of ‘One Reason’ with a chorus that recreates a time of ripped denim shorts and homemade bleach blonde mohicans. Similarly ‘Something To Live For’ roles into action, naturally taking your head and neck muscles with it, a song that has the potential to insight the most intense and painful mosh pits on this summers Warped Tour.
‘The Western World’ centrepieces this record’s political motivations without losing the power or aggression in sound but differing only with some striking lyrical content as Jim Lindberg spits each word with disgust but with the satisfaction of another job well done.
'Reason To Believe' (and there are plenty here) proves that Pennywise have once again put to rights their importance and vitality within another musical world in which they find themselves. The pumping fists that will accompany this album may not break the surface of contemporary rock’s rearguard but it’s certainly enough to bring a section of its underground to boiling point once again.
