Vincent Vincent & The Villians - Gospel Bombs
Artist profile: Vincent Vincent And The Villians

Rating: **

After grumbling derisively at so many indie trendsetters of late ripping off music from the 70’s and even the 60’s, there was a dear hope we might get something – whisper it – new? But Vincent Vincent And The Villains ushers in the depressing prospect of going even further back in time! What makes it un-nerving is that it only takes one band to be good at it to jump-start a bandwagon, and VVATV ply their sound so well it’s bound to unearth a hundred tiring imitators.

You see, 'Gospel Bombs' is actually a great record. It’s as much an effective album of background music, for playing in the park on sunny spring days (there will be some, i’m sure), or more in-depth listening. There are some quality lyrics on this record, from the storytelling of ‘Cinema’ and ‘Pretty Girl’ to the defiance of album highlight ‘I’m Alive’. The music has a hook that makes most tracks familiar and radio-friendly, and Vincent himself is blessed with a perfect voice for the style. But, tracks like ‘Sweet Girlfriend’ encapsulate the danger this band represent. This is, without a doubt, music you or your mate’s parents listened to, or maybe your grandparents. Now their music could be peddled as the latest hip new thing. There’s surf-pop harmonies. There’s sha-la-bloody-la’s. When The Beach Boys were in their prime, this would have been average. Now, it’s ridiculous.

VVATV are talented enough and quite capable of taking these influences and making something fresh and exciting out of them, but they play these sounds of the past so authentically that if this is your kind of record, you’re better off rooting through your mum’s vinyl collection. Or your nan’s.
