Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly - Searching For The Hows & Whys
Artist profile:
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.
Release Date: 10/03/08
Label: Atlantic Records
Rating: ****
It’s hard to dislike Sam Duckworth – with a clutch of likeable tunes, a troubador persona and the tremendous tendency to play entire sets of At The Drive-In songs at the drop of a hat he’s captured the hearts of many a music fan normally more au fait with the recent batch of ‘emo’ invaders from the States.
This is undeniably a good thing – there’s potential that he could introduce a generation of kids raising themselves on self-indulgent naval gaze-rock to purposely political music (as on the standout track here ‘I Could Build You A Tower’) and the magic of Billy Bragg (who guests here), all the while maintaining a unique sound that while extremely personal, is also extremely inviting (see the arms-open choruses of opener ‘Let The Journey Begin’ and the touching ‘Moving Forward’).
Not to say that there aren’t possible mis-steps – many will deride the honesty of ‘Tower’ and wish that Get Cape would stick to an exclusively ‘bedroom’ world, but this is a record about moving on, shedding the past while retaining that strange sound that defines Get Cape.
As with his debut, this is a record that holds as much promise as it delivers and offers a bright future both for Duckworth and his fanbase.
Play on the words ‘Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly’ avoided!
