Frank Turner - Photosynthesis
Artist profile:
Frank Turner
Release Date: 24/03/08
Label: Xtra Mile
Rating: *****
The first single from Frank Turner’s second album is a prime example of why he’s one of this country’s best singer-songwriters. Catchy and lively, it’s impossible not to engage yourself with this song, clapping, singing or both. Yet unlike most material this accessible, it contains Turner’s knack for making intelligent songwriting seem simple. And if this track is any indicator of what to expect from the forthcoming 'Love Ire & Song', then his writing has greatly improved since being crowned Rocklouder’s second favourite artist of 2007.
One of his finest tracks to date, 'Photosynthesis' is a song of the troubles of adulthood that anyone can relate to. The lyrics may tackle the troubles of heading past your “angry adolescent days”, finding yourself faced with unintelligible teenage slang, shit new music fads and seeing your friends “getting married, mortgages and pension plans”. But the talk of ‘maturity’ meaning giving up on your dreams and a chorus that defiantly protests growing up is something that any age can relate to. And herein lays Turner’s strength. He can now craft songs like this with ease; songs that are at once catchy, simple and accessible enough to get radio airplay, yet retain such an intelligent skill for lyricism that songs such as 'Photosynthesis' can win over an elitist underground follower as easily as it can a casual pop fan.
