Having garnered plenty of press and attention over the last couple of years due to their rather brilliant moniker and legendarily brutish homosexual-rape themed lyrics, GFJD drop their debut album proper. So what do you get when you set aside the novelty value and get down to the music?
Well, you get what sounds like the live soundtrack to an unbearably upsetting snuff film, as delivered by a mentally deranged gay rapist narrator. Yes, it’s that good.
‘Cumpassion’ opens things up with it’s fierce, hate-fuelled, jagged hardcore attack, streaming neatly into ‘You Have A Theory, I Have A Gun’ an anti-war blast that in only 1 minute and 12 seconds manages to kill your pets and your belief in decency.
The searing ‘Belief In God’ is, against all odds, wickedly tuneful while ‘Lights Out’ with it’s ‘Fuck you I love you’ refrain is a shack of hardcore leaning against an emo wall.
For the most part, these are tales of sexual obsession screeched from the gut and equally guaranteed to terrify and please.
‘Juicy’s Last $ (Point The Finger)’ is a slice of strangely compelling hardcore featuring yet more reference to non-consensual sex, torture and the endless pleasures of agony. It typifies the themes of the album most succinctly.
When gears shift slightly as on the near-psychadelia of ‘Delirium Approaches’ and the drone of shoegaze closer ‘I Hate Our Freedom’, it’s a welcome respite from the short, sharp shocks of the main body of this beastly creation, and one that indicates that these boys have a great deal of scope to open out their talents in future.
Like Blood Brothers, they electrify, like Locust they terrify, but no-one else combines these disciplines quite like Gay For Johnny Depp.
