What We're Listening To: December
Artist profile:
Future Of The Left

Artist Of The Month: Jenny Owen Youngs
An artist I genuinely wasn't sure i'd ever get to see, it made my month getting to interview and see her live. A massively talented songwriter and a generally enchanting presence on stage, she's just made a new video and is back over here again as I write, hopefully making more of a name for herself. THE best new female singer/songwriter around.
Album Of The Month: Future Of The Left - Curses
From the ashes of Mclusky and Jarcrew comes one of the best things to happen to music in the last year. Instantly accessible despite being the epitome of 'alternative', their dry onstage banter is not to be missed, neither is the ludicrously loud music they play. 'Curses' includes song after song you'll find stuck in your head for weeks afterwards, from the throb of 'Fingers Become Thumbs' to the keyboard riddled 'Suddenly It's A Folk Song'. Suddenly it's your new favourite band.
Track Of the Month: Oceansize - Trail Of Fire
Back with a third album full of reasons why your record collection will never be good enough without Oceansize in it, this track epitomises just why they are one of the best bands in the country. It sweeps from dreamy beauty to a massive heavy beast before you can even notice. With the loss of Aereogramme and YCNI:M this year, they're one of the few truly outstanding bands we have left. You need to have this band in your life, buy 'Frames' and hear exactly why.

Artist Of The Month: Paramore
Not long after releasing their second full-length album, complimented and promoted with three singles and lots of touring, Paramore are back on the scene again and better than before. 'RIOT!' truly reveals the talent these young rock stars have in them, and there's a bit of eye candy there for both the boys and the girls too. They've progressed from 'All We Know Is Falling' in both songwriting skills and as a band, which is shown in the video for their most recent single 'crushcrushcrush'. I expect nothing but good things ahead.
Album Of The Month: The Blackout - We Are The Dynamite!
Debut full-length album which does what it says on the tin; 'We Are The Dynamite!' is a fantastic display of this Welsh six-piece at a whole new level. The tag-team vocals by Sean Smith and Gavin Butler have improved and though there's a little less screaming than in their previous work, there's a lot more variety in this one. The only bad thing about this is that it looks and sounds so much better live!
Track Of The Month: The Blackout - Go And Burn City Hall To The Ground
One of the band's oldest and more uncommon songs is also one of their greatest. 'Go And Burn City Hall...' is a melodic blast of post-hardcore and its most intense. Featured on their demo 'Pull No Punches' and re-released on their recent single 'The Beijing Cocktail', it's definitely one that you should get your hands on if you want to get into this band.
James O'Connell
Artist Of The Month: Dexy & The Hand Me Downs
From a thrilling live set at the Brixton Windmill a month or so back to their remarkable support slot with The Wedding Present at Koko even less time ago, these boys are proving that Americana can be played by British bands without slipping into cliche or parody. The very definition of the phrase 'Ones to watch', their debut album is due to begin recording in the near future which should see them dominate the airwaves in '08 and beyond.
Album Of The Month: Manchester Orchestra - Like A Virgin Losing A Child
A gaggle of teenagers from across the pond deliver an album that makes Arcade Fire's 'Funeral' look like an episode of 'Everybody Loves Raymond'. Epic, tragic and utterly gorgeous, this has been glued to the cd player for weeks. Not literally of course, as that would render it unplayable. And that would be stupid.
Track Of The Month: Future Of The Left - Suddenly It's A Folk Song
The best, most tuneful song Pavement never wrote, this is FOTL at their most accessible and has been going down a storm at recent gigs. From that whirling Juno keyboard through that melancholic / anthemic chorus, it's a mighty joy to stick in your ears on grey Autumn days.

Artist Of The Month: Prego
So the nights may be cold and the days seem to be getting shorter and darker by the second. I’ve been banishing those winter blues by listening to lots of Prego recently (tip: also quite good when you’re ill/hung-over) along with a nice hot mug of tea and peanut butter on toast.
Album Of The Month: The Libertines - ‘Time For Heroes - The Best Of The Libertines’
Re-live those glory days that you secretly never let die in the first place. Sing to your hearts content and remember the days when everything was cool in the Barat-Doherty camps. You’ll be glad you did.
Track Of the Month: Frank Turner – Vital Signs
This track has been played so many times on the bus to uni lately. Why? Because it’s guaranteed to have me grinning from ear to ear by the time I get to uni. Even the 9am lectures don’t seem so bad after playing this loud enough to deafen fellow passengers. Give it a try, you might like it!
