Blood Red Shoes - I Wish I Was Someone Better
Artist profile: Blood Red Shoes

Release Date: 22/10/07
Label: V2
Rating: ****

A band whose star has been on the rise for a couple of years now release a taster for their forthcoming full-length debut in the form of this pounding ode to self hatred and regret.

The two-piece line-up is, of course, bound to draw comparisons to The White Stripes (albeit with roles reversed), but the obvious similarities aside, this is a more energetic, youthful sound altogether with Steve Ansell’s scuttling drumbeats and americanised vocals forced along by Laura Mary Carter’s gritty, schizophrenic guitar and Kim Deal backing vocals.

It’s got the vibrant urgency of a late night race to Casualty (the hospital wing rather than the TV show), all pith, awkward angularity and divebombing sound with hints that a live show would be the ideal circumstance in which to get all fucked up and dance like a monkey to this violent, vibrant tune.
