Editor's note: I like The Hives. I really like them actually. Unfortunately James O'connell doesn't. James, as you've probably already noted, is one of our main writers, and one of exceptional talent. But when i sent him The Hives track to review, I wasn't aware of the hatred he bore for those crazy swedish popsters.
He sent back what follows, and normally I wouldn't run anything of this sort on the site about a band we like, but despite the pure fire and wrath that has spewed from the 'pen of James', it's such a lovely piece of writing I just couldn't not use it.
So yeah, just bear in mind that Rocklouder doesn't really hate The Hives, then read on below! (He's not wrong about An Albatross though! An awesome band that you should really checkout!!)

The Hives - 'Tick Tick Boom'
In a world where supposedly disposable bands of the past are resurrected daily to the collective groans of the few remaining sane pockets of the music world, it should come as no surprise that The Hives are, against the will of all that is right, still bloody going.
A manufactured ‘act’ that were briefly amusing several years ago with their faux Stooges/Stones schtick and mind-bending arrogance, there still appears to be some kind of market for this third or even fourth-hand bastardisation of Garage rock.
From its opening riff (nicked of course, and yes, it’s the same one all their songs have) through its laugh-out-loud fake-quirky chorus to it’s all too distant end, this is the sound of the utterly unoriginal, the stultifying, the stifling, the suffocation of ideas and ideals.
They’re still mining the same seam of ‘we’re The Hives and we’re better than some other bands’ in terms of the literacy-defying ‘lyrics’, and their delivery is still of that ‘This is a wake-up call’ nature that, when backed up with absolutely nothing of substance only serves to make them appear more foolish than they already are. Which is hard.
People move on, times and styles change, The Hives stay stuck in a nasty little rut, high on their own sense of self-importance, like a gaggle of smackheads who imagine they rule the world.
If you like garage rock, check out an amazing US band called An Albatross and forget this shit forever.
Review Ends.
Sorry mate, I really tried!
