Who Are They?
Nebraska are a 4-piece band from south east London. They are made up of Michael J. Hall (vocals), Benjamin Todd (guitars), Ben Stack (bass), and Jarrod Storm (drums). They’ve risen to prominence from the much talked about New Cross anti-scene in South East London.
What’s The Deal?
They’ve been together for a short while, with their first significant moment being the recording and release of debut LP ‘The Path To The Silent Country’ in 2006, on small London indie label Hometown Jam Records. The album was recorded with renowned producer Adrian Hall (The Clash, Live 8, Ray Davies), and was incredibly well received in indie circles, with Artrocker magazine calling it ‘A Stunning debut, surely destined for greatness’. The band have built a loyal fanbase after a fair amount of DIY touring and packed out London shows. They’re now at the point where theyre ready to take it to the next step, and with a number of labels sniffing around, expect to see a much more high profile release in the coming months.
Will I Like It?
They’ve been likened to anything from Afghan Whigs to The Smiths to early Manics. It’s guitar driven indie rock with a poppy feel to it, but it’s more epic than anything we’ve ever heard for sure. To go with that, the lyrics are deeply personal, beautifully written, and incredibly poetic. Their true greatness lies within the live show though, and they really have to be seen to be best understood.
What’s Next?
They’re currently recording a number of new tracks, again with producer Adrian Hall, one of which is slated to be a forthcoming single. 'The Great Divide' will be coming out on through small indie label 'Angry Liberal Records' sometime in November on limited edition 7" and download. It’s then only a matter of time before an established label picks them up, but if nothing suiting the band’s ideals and needs crops up at the right time, they won’t hesitate to keep releasing as they’ve been doing, and go it alone.
Nebraska really are one of the most incredible bands we’ve seen for a very long time. We recommend hitting up their myspace, and trying ‘The Sound The Stars Make’ for starters.
