The Autumns - Boys
Artist profile: The Autumns

Release Date: 01/10/07
Label: Bella Union
Rating: ****

Erstwhile Los Angeles dreampoppers The Autumns have spent the last decade honing a unique sound, earning a devoted US following and releasing a series of increasingly noteworthy underground albums and Eps culminating in 1994’s glorious and remarkably critically acclaimed self-titled record.

This, the lead single from their forthcoming ‘Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys’ album is the distillation of their years of work into a near perfect three minute pop single. Matt Kelly’s swooning falsetto negotiates Mew-like melodies, haunting and jolting in equal measure while Steve Elkin’s juddering powerhouse drums drive the track to the point of near collapse.

The magic here, though, is in the atmosphere these boys create – an instant feeling that this is a rock band with an idea, a pop band with math-rock sensibilities, an ambient band with a grasp of classic songwriting. It’s a remarkable experience.

While some may note similarities to The Killers, this is only true to the extent that both bands share an ear for a huge chorus and ear-achingly catchy backing vocals. Where Vegas’ ‘finest’ often come across as superficial and image obsessed, that criticism could never be levelled at a band with this level of experience and integrity.

For further proof check the free download on their website, a track called ‘Clem’ that could be Shellac covering Big Star!

Here’s hoping this record earns them their due place in the pantheon of indie rock.
