Smashing Pumpkins - That's The Way (My Love Is)
Artist profile:
The Smashing Pumpkins
Release Date: 10/09/07
Label: Warners
Rating: ****
The reunited (well partially) Smashing Pumpkins continue their massive contribution to American rock as if they never left, with their second single from the 'Zeitgeist' album - 'That's The Way (My Love Is)'.
Corgan and Chamberlin told fans in a recent interview that they sessioned for weeks before they felt they got the sound of the band back, and it's clear that the practice time was valuable as Corgan's voice and lyrics combine to form the angry Pumpkin delivery that everyone knows and loves. 'That's the Way' is a dark, burning love song; a typical Pumpkins topic addressed in typical Pumpkins manner, with flailing drums and heavy guitar riffs.
But this is not the raw grungy stuff that made up the early Pumpkins albums, like 'Gish' and 'Siamese Dream'. This is more refined and a little restrained, much like the songs on 'Adore' and the 'Machina' albums. For people unfamiliar with the Smashing Pumpkins, the Nirvana-esque guitars and raspy yet tuneful singing would be a welcome change from the frat boy rock and childish feeling-sorry-for-themselves emo so prevailent in the charts right now. This is angry music with real anger and hurt, not the juvenile petty sadness of middle-class kids who think they know about pain because they stubbed their toe playing B-ball, and are in tune with the street because they buy their pot from a black man.
The only weakness of this well-accomplished rock single is the lack of a real killer hook, be it a sublime chorus like 'Tonight, Tonight' or a head-banging riff like 'Zero'. But all in all, a very good outing by the Pumpkins, better than their first single from the new album, and shows that they're still vital and have a lot to offer, rather than being the worn out American rock giants some feared.
