Interview: The Hair

We had a chat with The Hair just before the release of their newest single, 'Disco / Retro'.
Hello! Your new single is going to have hand-decorated sleeves, do you have a lot of spare time?
Sam - No just not a great deal of regard for ourselves, me and Neil have been camped out in his room two days straight stencilling and getting high off spray paint... but some of the designs look AMAZING!
Are you thinking towards your debut album?
Sam - We'd like to do one, I've already started thinking about the difficult second one, the resurgent third, the experimental drug-fuelled fourth, the laboured fifth and the twenty year anniversary greatest hits. Such is my dreamy mindset.
You use rather a lot of samples - have you ever had trouble getting permission to use them?
Neil - It's only a matter of time. Haha. No, we've had to remove some film-clip samples from a couple of tracks to make them radio-friendly but it's no big deal. A lot of our samples are our own, stuff we've created on synths / 4-tracks / drum machines etc.
Do you mind getting lumped in with the Leeds scene despite not many of you originating from there?
Neil - Not at all, we've found a base here in Leeds. A second-home if you like. Sam and I live in Leeds and have done for years, and Lee's moving near by soon. The Leeds 'scene' has been great for us. So many ace bands, promoters, producers and DJs have been really supportive.
Tell us about the 20 / 20 / 2 vision competition you won earlier in the year?
Neil - It was great fun. We kinda entered it not realising how much we'd benefit from it. There's basically twenty bands and twenty film-makers and you get two weeks to make a music vid (20 / 20 / 2... see what they did there?) we were teamed up with a couple of lovely lads called Matt and Adam, Clarke-Elton Productions. We brain stormed a load of ideas that fit in around their amazing never-ending zoom shot technique(!) you'll have to watch it to get what I mean, it's clever stuff. The filming was a unique experience. We ended up having an all-night fancy-dress party with all our mates dancing around with ridiculous props... such as bikes, space-hoppers, light sabres, dogs, skateboards etc.
Isn't being played before Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the prize for 20 / 20 / 2, more a punishment?
Sam - Ha! If it was in the middle of their set, so I had to watch them first then yes I think so... otherwise getting your played to around 80000 people is pretty cool. A great moment I hope!
What are your plans for the remainder of the year?
Sam - We're playing some gigs around this single but I guess we'll keep on recording / playing / releasing. Best thing about being in a band is you never know what is going to happen next, either that or you do know but you can't tell people in interviews.
