Tegan And Sara, Leeds Cockpit
Artist profile: Tegan And Sara

Date: 15/08/07
Rating: *****

From the moment we enter The Cockpit, we can tell that this is no ordinary gig. With an atmosphere more like that of a house party full of friends, and the dulcet tones of Eugene Francis Jr. pulsating through the room, we know we are in for something pretty spectacular.

Eugene's set is a pleasant opener; his wardrobe of kooky hats makes for great entertainment, and his songs are almost velvety smooth. He gets the crowd going through well timed mentions of the venue and a cheeky smile, and paves the way perfectly for the Canadian duo.

Tegan and Sara take to the stage and instantly overwhelm with their passion and excitement. They are fantastic in no every sense of the word; energy radiates from their elevated platform at every given opportunity. The thing that really makes these girls stand out is their audience interaction. They tell adorable anecdotes, play flirtatious games, and genuinely seem to know their audience; it's almost like having your best mate up on stage.

Songs from their new album, 'The Con' are received really well. Almost every one is sung dutifully back to the twins. Nevertheless, the set favourite has to be oldie 'Where Does The Good Go?' It's perfectly timed, gorgeously sung and flawlessly performed. So much so that the recorded version isn't even a patch on the live one, although the same could be said for every song that they sing tonight!

Tegan and Sara are a refreshing change from durgy indie boy bands, being battered to death at gigs, and the "plug in, play, and leave" approach that seems to be the norm these days. They're quirky, inspired and individual, and definitely someone we'll be rushing to see again soon.
