Yellowcard - Paper Walls
Artist profile:
Yellowcard
Release Date: 16/07/07
Label: Capitol
Rating: ****
Yellowcard's latest album sees the band capture their true punk element, and undeniably re-establishes any credibility lost with previous letdown album, 'Light and Sounds'. Marking the debut of Ryan Mendez, who previously joined the group on tour, and addition of a violin to the band, Yellowcard return with their sixth album offering buoyant music filled with propulsive riffs and catchy lyrics. Presenting the band at their melodic best, 'Paper Walls' is sure to stick in your head for days.
Opening track 'The Takedown' launches into an intense mix of energy, combining captivating guitar hooks and ferocious drums entwined with vocal harmonies, clearly establishing Yellowcard's key sound for the rest of the album. Stand out tracks include the unforgettable lead single 'Light Up The Sky', the extremely catchy 'Fighting' and the heartfelt 'Dear Bobbie' sampling Ryan Key's real-life grandfather reading an enthralling love letter to his wife of 58 years, particularly reminiscent of the letter sampled on the opening of 'Stockholm Syndrome' on Blink 182's final album.
Drawbacks from the album may be that, on first listen, many tracks appear somewhat depthless and may not immediately capture the listener, however the album is definitely a grower, and after a few more listens you'll no doubt be singing along to the beguiling lyrics. All 13 songs are certainly chorus driven, and lyrics may appear somewhat ingenious to some, yet Yellowcard are simply producing what they do best, fun pop-punk music. It is notable that the album has been created through the sheer joy of the band for writing and playing music, and 'Paper Walls' certainly captures the much appreciated hook-filled and buoyant style of previous album 'Ocean Avenue'.
The last five tracks of the album show the band finally kicking into high gear and once the end of the album is reached, Yellowcard demonstrate their true strength in producing powerful and respectable music. Perhaps a little depthless for some, yet 'Paper Walls' is the perfect pop-punk album for those seeking a leisurely listen.
