Already established in America, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus are releasing their debut album 'Don't You Fake It' in the UK. Slickly produced, full of hooks and melodies, it's incredibly accessible - with just the right amount of shouty aggression to sell by the truckload. But the backlash on this kind of posthardcoreemopopcore is well underway, and with so much utter dross being churned out it's easy to dismiss a release that's already effectively over six months old, so TRJA have their work cut out!
Opener 'In Fate's Hands' is a good way to start; punchy, urgent and with an obligatory crowd-participating "Hey! Hey!" already installed, it's perfect for igniting moshpits and dance floors. Lead single 'Face Down' and 'Waiting' are expertly executed examples of the genre, the single in particular is truly infectious, the moral content (domestic abuse) strong enough to overcome simple lyrics to make it good enough to take on the big hitters. However - and that's a However with a capital H: Story Of The Year. Hawthorne Heights. Underoath. Panic! At The Disco. The list goes on, and there's elements of the lot of them all over 'Don't You Fake It'. It's manufacturing line stuff, there is absolutely nothing new on offer, including bittersweet Ballads like 'Cat And Mouse' that are sickeningly saccharine and uninvolving.
If they had emerged before Panic! At The Disco changed the dynamic and public opinion, they would likely have become huge already. But after so many bands have already paved the way before them, these songs prove too unoriginal, overfamiliar and inoffensive. However, these facts are also likely to make them sell by the thousand, and with a knack for well executed pop this will stand them in good stead despite this kind of music's slow death.
