The opening band of this years NME 'Rock Tour' ended their own tour with an obligatory headline gig in London. Mumm-Ra were the highlight of that aftermentioned tour, though it's not that hard to shine in the presence of The Horrors, The View or The Automatic, so this headline show has been heavily anticipated. Unfortunately, despite having the same 'lucky' opening slot as Coldplay and Kaiser Chiefs in previous years, this 800 capacity isn't even close to selling out, which is a little disappointing.
After a storming and energetic support from youngsters Ripchord, Mumm-Ra come on one by one, playing their instruments as they go. They rock out in that anthemic Indie way that's so popular nowadays, gently rocking out the young audience for just under 55 minutes. Playing mostly from their forthcoming debut album, 'These Things Move in Threes', it is mainly the singles which stand out. Songs like 'Out of the Question' and 'She's Got You High' have been chosen to represent the band on radio for a reason. Aside from having the same name as the excellent Muse song, 'Starlight' is also a gig highlight.
Unfortunately, despite playing well, the fact the venue is only half full means there is a lack of atmosphere, and whilst they're undoubtedly a good band, they are not so good as to overcome these difficulties. It's hard to get excited by anthemic songs when there's a lack of people singing along to them. By the end, through little fault of their own, the gig even becomes a little tedious. Overall, a good band who have played an average gig. With a bigger crowd though, they could slay the room.
