Mumm-Ra - These Things Move In Threes
Artist profile:
Mumm-Ra
Release Date: 28/05/07
Label: Columbia
Rating: ***
You'll be forgiven for jumping the moment you first put this record onto play. Vocalist Noo's love-or-hate-it voice jumps out at you horribly high on opening track 'Now Or Never'. The rhyming is awfully obvious too, but if you can get past those two you're in for a nice forty minutes.
The singles are the obvious stand-outs already – 'Out Of The Question', 'What Would Steve Do?' and the beautiful 'She's Got You High' still evoke the same smile they first delivered. But if you think you know Mumm-ra by the easily boring and yet so magical offering of the former, you'll be pleased to hear you're very, very, wrong. Future single 'Song B' storms ahead above the rest, a desperate plea to be taken seriously by those who like to dance – and, thankfully for them, passing with flying Saturday-Night-Fever steps.
'These Things Move In Threes' is an odd choice for a title track, one more likely to provoke mocking than sympathy with lyrics like "my head is filled with disease", but the message works all the same. Then there's 'Sick Deal', with a riff more suited to a car chase than a Mumm-Ra track. A riff so encasing, perhaps, that it's hard to work out why they bothered putting lyrics to this one at all.
The opening video game keyboards of 'This Is Easy' are a bit too much for us, and the album's one track too long with 'Down Down Down', but if you can put up with the contrast this-is-fast-and-the-next-three-are-slow mentality, you'll see this is a good record, although thanks to the pace it's certainly a grower. It'll be interesting to see where they go for their next record – this-is-slow-and-the-next-three-are-fast, we hope.
'These Things Move In Threes' is the sort of record you'll want to listen to alone, on the train, staring out the window and caging excitement for the gig you're going to that night. The jumpers will lift you up, while the slower ones (sadly a few too many here) will remind you there's so much more life to live, so just enjoy the moments like these. Just be careful not to give into the temptation to sing along. Then again, scaring the commuters is always fun...
