Tim Ten Yen - Girl Number One

Jesus, you want to hate Hen Pen Glen, or whatever his name is - there he is with his cat who may as well be named Pretentious; a prime dumbarse - but it's ok, because he makes music, therefore it's kooky and cool, right newspaper?
Then you listen to him, and you realise he can be as kooky as he fucking wants. The moment 'Girl Number One' begins to play you know something special has happened, you know the ice caps are melting, but fuck it, who cares – you've just fallen in love!
This is happy pop music. This is what you want in life. This is what makes you smile and lets you open your arms and embrace the world while standing on a cliff, rather than jumping off of it. "It all began when I got a letter / found it in pocket / nothing written on it". Who hasn't felt that? Ok, yeah, you'd probably never phrase it the same, but still...
The B-sides keep in tone, too. 'When The Song Applies To You' is as awfully fantastic as it sounds, as is 'Your Love Is All I Want' – which for the first ten seconds sounds like a Bryan Adams tune before twisting its way to remind you of the bad yet brilliant parts in a Simon Pegg / Nick Frost script.
Maybe it's the reggae reminder, the quirky voice, or the fact that you know he carries himself in the manner he does. Either way, go for it and make him as big as Oasis. You'll find few things better the moment his record starts playing.
