Panic! At The Disco - Build God, Then We'll Talk
Artist profile: Panic At The Disco

Rating: ****

You know the type; middle-class American teenagers with way too much time on their hands, thinking that because they wear make-up in their videos they're somehow 'weird' and 'quirky'. Panic! At The Disco are like that, and by that account, this new single should be crap. It really should, but for some reason it isn't.

Panic! have this strange stop-start style, and intelligent and interesting lyrics, which distinguish them from rival American pop-rock bands like Fall Out Boy. Sure the same (at times annoying) singing style is present, and the theme of their songs primarily concern affluent young American teenagers of the OC ilk, but the structure, various ideas, and differing styles of music are intriguing, and 'Build God, Then We'll Talk' embodies these ideas at their best.

If you're already familiar with Panic!'s other singles, this is the least mainstream, but, surprise surprise, the best so far from the 'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out' album. This isn't because they use words like 'asbestos' and 'formaldehyde', but rather the catchiness of the chorus in contrast with the complex verses and middle-eights. The use of accordions could easily be cheesy, but somehow isn't. The deliberate wholesale copying of 'My Favourite Things' in the latter part of the song should be awful, but turns out sounding inspired.

Whilst on the surface Panic! seem to be yet another band in the shadow of acts like My Chemical Romance and the aforementioned Fall Out Boy, on closer inspection they're one of the most interesting new bands to come out of the US in 2006, and this is their best song so far.
